🦋 Personality

Option 1:
  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. For most of his life, Kaiba was firmly against the belief that magic was real. Something so intangible and illogical made no sense, he knew no one with the ability, so he would shape the world through his intelligence and ability in engineering alone.

Unfortunately for him, just because he had a disdain for magic didn't mean it would pass him by. Once he seized control of Kaiba Corporation and became fixated on becoming the greatest duelist in the world, he terrorized the grandfather of another young duelist and paid the price. Yugi Mutou, a rival duelist aided by the pharaoh’s spirit residing in the ancient Egyptian puzzle he wore, shattered Kaiba's twisted soul and forced him into a magic-induced coma to rebuild himself.

Shortly after Kaiba awakened, his brother's soul was stolen and sealed in a card by another of the ancient Egyptian artifacts, the Millennium Eye. After a failed attempt to rescue his brother, his own soul was taken as well. As the months went on, Kaiba regularly observed people being possessed and controlled by the other Millennium Items.

No matter how big the disruptions got, he treated them as annoyances to be overcome. Someone was severely weakened in a duel when magic was used against them? Wheel them off to medical and hope they live. Someone can't remember their day because they were possessed? Annoying, but it happens.
His greatest annoyance was his belief that Yugi and Pharaoh Atem use the magic of the Millennium Puzzle to 'cheat' at Duel Monsters. Kaiba thoroughly believes in the game as the ultimate test of skill, and he's watched time and time again as he's backed them into a corner only for them to top-deck the winning card at the last second. In most respects Kaiba will work around magic, but he deeply resents those he perceives to be using it for an unfair advantage.

  3. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.

  4. Kaiba's heart only has room for one mythological creature: the Blue Eyes White Dragon. His most treasured card in Duel Monsters, the shining beast with terrifying claws and lightning breath represents ultimate freedom and power to him. His love for the dragon has been twisted in the past, but it's been with him since childhood, and even in his past life before reincarnation.

As an orphaned child in a depressing situation, he had daydreams about flying away from his troubles with his brother Mokuba on the great creature's back. Mokuba even scribbled a drawing of the Blue Eyes card because he couldn't afford the real card at the time. That drawing was precious, and when his cruel adopted father separated the brothers and took away all their toys and childish things, Mokuba smuggled the drawing into a textbook to inspire his brother.

The moment Kaiba was free from his father's chains and became a duelist, he set about obtaining three Blue Eyes cards, threatening violence against their previous owners to do so. He craved power and domination at the expense of all else, and power was perfectly represented by Blue Eyes.
Even after Kaiba was forced to rebuild his heart and his tunnel vision focus on power was broken, his loyalty to the Blue Eyes never faded. It remained his most powerful ally in the game, even more important and beloved than the on-paper more powerful God Card he owned.

If the Blue Eyes was not an option, Kaiba would settle for being another dragon, or a griffin. Maybe a large kaiju. Any creature he turns into needs to have freedom of movement and the strength to conquer the world, that's non-negotiable. In other words, don't make him a merperson or something. Far too little mobility. Golems are too slow, and pixies too small. He needs to not only feel powerful, but look the part as well.

  5. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  6. Mokuba is a very close second, the brother he adores, and risks so much for. If he had to choose between staying with Mokuba or following Atem, it would be a painful choice. But the only person he would likely have to follow to another realm is Atem, the dead pharaoh whose spirit had resided in Yugi Mutou's Millennium Puzzle. His greatest rival, the only duelist he's never been able to defeat.

Their relationship started off as entirely antagonistic, as Kaiba was threatening Yugi's family at the time, but after Kaiba rebuilt his heart, a more equal rivalry began between them. Their initial encounters after this were still heated, with death threats (entirely on Kaiba’s part) giving way to boasting, but over time a respect steadily grew between them. Dueling Atem helped Kaiba to feel alive and fulfilled like nothing else.

Atem saved Kaiba's life more than once. They both encouraged each other throughout the Battle City tournament , demanding that the other not give up when backed into a corner. No one was worthy to defeat either of them but the other. Their rivalry stretched back thousands of years, even, with the eventual revelation that Kaiba was the incarnation of Set, one of Atem's priests. Though Kaiba would absolutely deny being a reincarnation of Priest Set, and absolutely hated being compared to him...ultimately the shoe fit. Like Set, Kaiba had antagonized Atem, but ultimately came to respect and honor him as his sole equal.

And then Atem did the worst thing possible: he departed to his afterlife after being bested by Yugi in a duel. Kaiba witnessed this, but he was denied the chance to duel Atem one more time (and thus, Kaiba never get his King of Games title back). He would do just about anything to see his greatest rival again. In fact, Kaiba's manga universe counterpart did just that by using the powers of dangerous science and willpower to break into the afterlife. This Kaiba hasn't gone to that extreme, but he definitely could.

  7. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  8. It's often said to be pride, and there's a solid case for that as well, but stubbornness edges that out just slightly. Yes, Kaiba is very arrogant and self-assured in his intelligence and abilities. He values projecting strength, insults other duelists of lesser skill, and he claims he's the best duelist even when that's objectively untrue.

But no matter the trauma he suffers, the amount of losses he endures, or the odds stacked against him, he never, ever gives up. It's a weird fusion of pride and stubbornness, but he will not allow himself to remain a loser. 'To lose is to die' had been his adoptive father's mantra, so he simply will not. Even when Kaiba loses, he'll demand a rematch.

His ability to dig in his heels out of stubbornness extends beyond the game. He'll fight through endless armed guards and even risk his life to rescue his brother, barely flinching as guns are pointed at him. He'll go up against duelist opponents who are clearly using magic against him, determined to duel to the end against the odds. Even when he's been told by a woman who can see the future that he's destined to lose and that the future is written, he'll muster his willpower and fight to rewrite it then and there. In that case, he even succeeded and proved that destiny isn't written in stone.

For anything involving his primary goals of protecting Mokuba and defeating Atem in a fair duel, there's virtually no mountain too high to climb.
