It's a tough battle, and Kaiba's first proper test as a Trainer. Mizuchi had retaliated against being blown away, Zephyra had shown off her agile grace, King and Mothra had pitched in where they could....but it came down to Leizi, the Raichu who loved to hang ten.
She'd expertly zapped the Pidgeot to slow it down, dished out her little jolts...and with some evasive maneuvers she'd managed to keep out ahead and best the bird. Kaiba rushed to her side to give her a potion, and there was an immediate effect: she started twirling on her little surfboard-tail all around the arena. That was fun!
Kaiba stepped forward to receive his first Indigo League badge from Falkner, thanked him for the opportunity somewhat awkwardly (hey, still working on the grace thing), then walked back toward Marik with Leizi floating at his side. He smiled at his friend.
"...guess dinner's on me tonight, huh?" A little teasing laugh, but it's clearly an offer.
Marik, Chenzira, and Oba watch the entire battle, eyes glued to the field. Even if Kaiba's still learning, the man knows showmanship no matter what situation he's in. If he were uncertain about anything during his battle, anyone watching would have no idea. The guy's a natural. This is something Marik soon won't forget and it inspires him to train even more. Maybe someday he'll be able to take on the gyms and appear half as confident as Kaiba.
Once the battle is done and Kaiba receives his badge, Marik walks over to meet up with him and laughs, then in what most who truly know him would assume to be an uncharacteristic moment, he throws his arms around the other teen's torso to pull him into an excited hug. Chenzira of course gives him a pat on the head from his perch on his trainer's head. Oba flings himself at King because CONGRATS BIG BROTHER.
"That was... That was incredible! Like something you'd see out of a movie...!" His grin feels so wide it's hurting his face but he's too happy to care. "I knew you could do it!"
Kaiba has his arm half-extended, as if expecting a high five, but this is new. It's nice to have someone to lean on for a minute while the adrenaline filters out, though, so he'll return the hug. It's over...their first match, they did it. And they're in this together. Kaiba, his team, Marik, and his team. He's just starting to understand what that means, and it's actually a pretty nice feeling. Kaiba sighs contentedly, reaching up with one hand to pat Chenzira's.
Meanwhile, King gladly catches Oba and spins him around! That was so much fun! He's so glad his little brother got to see it. They're on the road to being champs someday, and they're gonna prove it to the world. Leizi continues to zip around, static electricity sparking all around her---ah, maybe Kaiba had better make sure she gets outside before she zaps someone. He pulls back with a little fond smile and leads the way out---first top, PokéCenter to get everyone healed up, but thankfully there aren't any critical injuries.
"The thrill of a duel with a strong opponent...it's not just my skill on the line anymore. Our partners are the ones in charge of the battle. And you all exceeded expectations today."
Leizi finally floats close enough for him to reach over and pat her head. He gets a little static electricity and his hair shoots up in every direction, but he laughs it off. She earned it today.
It's an odd sensation that's for sure, especially for Marik when it comes to someone touching his back, but he's far too excited to let it bother him now outside of the slightest hint of him instinctively tensing up at first. A part of him also wonders... is this what it's like to have a true friend? He'd always thought the way Yugi and his gang interacted was childish, weak. But here he is, doing the exact same thing with Kaiba. He's actively invested in seeing the guy do well in this world, see him succeed and become a super-power. Obviously there's perks in it for him but the majority of what he feels is to see good things happen to his friend. Chen beams happily upon being patted and Oba is far too excited being spun around and starts vibrating. Don't worry. He's okay.
Marik follows next to Kaiba as they head to the Poké Center, still grinning widely, even laughing at the static that effects the other teen's hair.
"You were really in synch with your pokémon. If all of your battles are going to be this good I might never leave your side. That even got my adrenaline pumping!"
Kaiba reaches a hand up and tries to fix his hair, his face twisting into a little frown. He's really going to have to wear gloves when dealing with Leizi, isn't he...?
Ah well. He shrugs as they walk on their way, and then Marik says something else that stuns him. It's so shocking that he literally stops in his tracks.
"You really want that? Um. Well."
He takes a moment to attempt to regain his composure.
"I'm glad you finally noticed. And I'm glad you're with me, too. You don't cramp my style, and...it's good to have someone to trade ideas with."
King, from his position bringing up the rear while still carrying Oba, makes a happy noise of agreement. Yes, let's all stay together!
The Egyptian thinks nothing of it. As long as Kaiba doesn't mind him tagging along then they're good, right? He blinks, looking over at the other teen when he stops.
He's about to voice his thoughts when Kaiba beats him to the punch. Marik can't help but grin. That's why he's begun appreciating the brunette's friendship. He doesn't hold his punches and generally says what's on his mind - if it needs to be said.
"Likewise. I wouldn't have stuck around if we weren't similarly minded. You've always had a certain level of tenacity I liked," he nudges Kaiba in the arm although his grin softens into a smile. "Really, if you hadn't of come along, I'd probably be wasting away doing nothing."
He had a few ideas before his fellow duelist had arrived but nothing well thought out and no real motivation to further his goals. Maybe he'd eventually get stir crazy enough but it probably wouldn't have happened for a while.
The smile turns back into a grin as he chuckles. "I'm pleased to hear I don't cramp your style though~"
Oba vibrates happily on top of King, absolutely estatic about everything going on and not knowing what to do about it.
"Mm. I can't wait to see you and your team thrive in battle. You have the foundation...you'll be ready sooner than you think." Kaiba's confident in them. Chenzira's done so well in training lately, and he knows the rest fo the team is shaping up well.
At last they reach the PokéCenter. King has to reluctantly hand Oba back to Marik so he can go get patched up, and Kaiba hands the rest of the team over. He's worked with the nurses and Chanseys here quite a bit these last few weeks, so he quietly informs them his challenge was successful and they'll be moving on soon. There's some happy murmuring from the Chanseys, and he smiles a little. He'll see them again sometime.
He turns to face Marik as he waits for his team to be returned. "But don't sell yourself short, you would've found something to do. You and Chenzira...you would've kept exploring and stumbled across something. And I'll keep up so I don't hold you back."
Ah, feeding Marik's ego. It usually doesn't go to well but today it's a good thing. He puffs his chest out even if it's mostly been Chenzira that's done most of the hard work. The Yamask smiles shyly at the praise though and nods his head to Kaiba in thanks.
"I'll be catching up on no time. Oh. Thank you, King."
Now that he's gotten over the mental hurdle and Chen's become more comfortable with battling and training, Marik's determined to catch up to Kaiba. He takes Oba back and pats King on the head before he leaves to get healed. Oba blurbles and squirms. Bye bye, big brother!
Watching the other teen's interactions with his pokémon and even the Chanseys is... endearing. He's glad to see that even if the living situation isn't great for them, Kaiba's been able to make a good impression during his time here.
"I'm sure we would have eventually found something but you definitely helped. And I very much doubt you could ever hold me back. You're way too good at anything you set your mind too. In the off chance I do catch up to you, we'll just keep helping each other to get better, alright? Heh. We'll be a dream team!"
It's a weird concept but... it certainly doesn't sound unpleasant. Kaiba's been fun traveling with and Marik has been slowly opening up more about himself to him as they've been together. Nothing too personal but little glimpses into his past and his thoughts on things here and there.
Fortunately, the nurses and Chanseys are very quick, and his team is back to full health very soon! He thanks them once more and heads out...and once they're off the beaten path, back toward the lake, he reaches for the Poké Balls...and with a twist of his wrist, he throws five at once. Out they all come: King, Mizuchi, Leizi, Mothra, and Zephyra.
King immediately rushes over to grab his trainer in a crushing hug. Kaiba catches him with a grunt, gently patting him. He did so well defending the rest. Mizuchi next, he gently strokes her spines and assures her she held her own. A brushing for Zephyra, luring Mothra back with some honey, a (careful) petting for Leizi...they're all fed and taken care of, and he ends up sitting with Zephyra and Mizuchi on the grass while King resumes bouncing and playing with Oba.
Now he can resume his plotting with Marik.
"We can even pair well in double battles. Chenzira knows a lot of defensive and tricky moves that are perfect when paired with an attacker. Anippe's abilities pair well with my water Pokémon. And there's always a one-two punch...hm, we'll be unstoppable."
Although he hadn't doesn't nearly as much time as Kaiba at the clinic, he also makes sure to thank them before they leave. Once they're back out by the lake, and after his fellow teen's impressive toss of five pokeballs to which he mutters a playful "showoff...", Marik lets out the rest of his team as well, making sure they're fed and happy. Oba immediately zooms back over to King and Anippe joins those two. Oba's so happy to have a slime family! Badru and Bahiti sit nestled up with each other by the river's edge. Marik sits down next to Kaiba with Chenzira slipping down to drape over his trainer's shoulder and Usi just... flops next to them.
"As long as you don't mind. I'm not... the greatest tag team partner."
He briefly thinks back to when poor Bakura fell victim to his terrible advice during their Shadow Game with his darker self.
"... So it might be better for me to let you lead and I act as backup. At least until get more familiar with the tactics." He sighs. "I don't like... having to depend on someone so much so I'll do my best to learn quickly."
Kaiba suspects there's a story there. He raises a brow, but remains quiet as Mizuchi snuggles into his side.
"Oh, you will. We'll practice before we start a battle that matters, and...I believe in you and your team. Your team has so much power and potential."
He looks out at their Pokémon playing, and an older memory comes to mind. "I managed to trust my most bitter rival, the Pharaoh, in a tag team duel more than once. If I can do it with him, we'll be fine."
Hm...maybe another tactic? He could recruit the team in his effort to bolster Marik. With that in mind, he tries to catch Chenzira's eye and smile.
The fact that Kaiba seems to have faith in him is hard for the Egyptian to wrap his head around. He feels like he's barely done anything to show that he's reliable, at least when it comes to pokémon battles.
"The Pharaoh is a good duelist," he remarks although still skeptical of just how good the Spirit of The Puzzle really is. No one can just pull the stuff he does without there being hidden powers or some other such nonsense. "I suppose since there aren't any Shadow Powers here, you don't need to worry about me bringing you into too much trouble..."
Chenzira's been filled in on everything of Marik's past even if he can't fully understand all the details. He's glad these shadow battles aren't present here because seeing Mr. Kaiba and his 'big brother' wind up in danger because of it would make him very sad. He manages a shy smiles up at his trainer's friend, tilting his head curiously.
Marik finally looks up to meet Kaiba's gaze. "I appreciate that you believe in me though."
A pause as he realizes... "... I can't say that I've... ever had that before. It's... strange. I feel guilty but also flattered...? I'm not really sure..."
Kaiba isn't entirely sure how to handle this conversation. He's definitely not the best at encouraging people who are less confident....in fact, in his old life he definitely would've exploited a weakness to stomp through. But they're a team now, and Marik's been a valuable ally all this time, and good to be around.
But how can he help him to be more confident? He closes his eyes in thought for a moment, breathing in and out...and as he opens them and looks up, his eyes drift to the further away Pokémon. He sees King and Anippe happily playing with Oba, and the little slug family reminds him of something important.
"...If you don't believe me, try asking your team. I think I know what their answer will be," he says softly.
Kaiba isn't the only one not sure how to handle the conversation. Marik's already mentally berating himself for opening up but if he can't be honest with the one person he's come to consider and trust as an ally and friend, who can he open up to?
He looks over at all of his pokémon, seeing how happy they all are. Waking up here was his second chance at life, right? That's what he'd considered it at least. No strings attached, no need to worry about his past sins. At least not terribly since no one else was from his time. He's been trying to bury everything he once was before this world but since Kaiba arrived, the blonde has been second guessing himself. Marik isn't normal, has never been normal, and will never be just a normal teen. He's gone through too much, learned what he needed to to become successful in life albeit in rather illegal manners. He takes what he wants and doesn't let others slow him down. Perhaps that's why he and Kaiba get along as well as they do here. He needs to find a good balance. To be tenacious in his own goals and motivations but be mindful and caring to his team and companion. It's frustrating it's taken him this long to see and that he needed someone else to point it out in the first place.
But that's just it, isn't it? What he really needs is guidance in life. To know that he's on the right track. That he's doing alright even when he gets upset at his own progress. It's a bit embarrassing he's getting that from Kaiba in some regard as the other teen has already helped raise his little brother. Marik doesn't want to be a burden. Maybe that's exactly what they both need though.
He shakes his head, looking over at Chenzira for a moment, this small, perfectly loving creature that pacifies the dark thoughts in his mind. That depends on him and wants to see him happy. All of them do. The Egyptian huffs and purses his lips, trying to deflate his ego and a bit of his stubborn pride before he decides to speak.
"... You're right. I'm sorry you have to keep giving me ego boosts because I'm... so damn lost on what to do with myself when the answer's right in front of me. Today should be about you. You beat your first gym! You absolutely crushed it. And now here I am, making it all about myself."
He clicks his tongue in annoyance then looks to Kaiba.
"I'll put my drama king act on hold. We should be celebrating. Drinking saké or something." Fitting of the underage teen dressed like a punk to suggest such a thing. "If you're buying dinner then I'm grabbing us another night at the inn. Got it?... We can talk about my sarcophagus-sized basket of issues later or something."
"Heh. We can try...but yeah, let's have a good night."
Kaiba can agree to that. He stands up and stretches, offering his hand to Marik. They can face the rest later...
...well, maybe later that night. After a lavish dinner for both humans and Pokémon, Kaiba settles into the hotel room with a quiet sigh of contentment. He sits on one of the beds with Selene the Eevee on his lap, settling in to brush her. She might not be big enough to battle yet, but she's a calming presence.
He looks over at Marik as he brushes, seeming to consider whether he wants to speak before...hm, he'll just do it.
"I've been thinking a lot about earlier. I'm...actually not as put-together as you think I am. I felt a connection to you in part because I'm a mess too, and I don't think anyone except maybe the Pharaoh and Yugi's group know just how deep the hole is that I've been trying to claw myself out of. I've...had to atone too. And sometimes I'm not sure if the person I am is even authentic, or it's just another lie."
He stops to consider Marik's reaction. He can keep it more surface level or go deeper, either way...Selene looks up at him with sad eyes, but he gently brushes her ears. It's okay.
And what a damned good dinner it is. It's nice to feel like a king again even if it's just for a night. Kaiba and his team earned it, that's for sure. Soon they'll be able to do stuff like this more often once their Meowths have leveled up. That'll be the day...
Marik's sitting on the other bed dueling Chenzira, who's concentrating really hard on which card to pick. Just... gotta figure out... what the scribbles say...
The blonde perks up and turns his attention to Kaiba when he starts talking. (Chen's thankful because it gives him more time to try and read.) What the other teen says though isn't what he was expecting at all. It makes sense, yeah. But to have him open up on his own... He's silent for a few moments as he considers what to say.
"What's that saying? Fake it till you make it?" He replies, looking up at his friend. "I figured you had your own 'demons.' You do a damn good job at keeping it together though. More so than most people."
Marik sets his cards down and nods to Chenzira. The Yamask nods in return, understanding the game is on pause but he'll keep trying to read.
The Egyptian takes a deep breath and slowly exhales. Kaiba's being honest with him. Time for him to do the same. First he needs to see what the other's stance is on the supernatural. He knows his sister absolutely fumbled that attempt to convince him prior but maybe he's seen enough by now to know that there is something more to the world than what just science and technology can prove.
"... How much do you know about the Millennium Items?"
Kaiba exhales softly. He hadn't meant to go quite in this direction...but both of their stories are tied to the legacy of the Items in some way, so they might as well. He rubs Selene's head and watches her tail gently bob back and forth.
"I know...they were created by a massacre in a desperate attempt to stop an even worse outcome. That the Rod was originally held by the priest who I'm allegedly a reincarnation of, and the Puzzle contained the Pharaoh's soul. They all have powers that can be used for good or ill..."
But he doesn't want to hurt Marik, so he adds: "But hey, I managed to do plenty of damage without one. And...I'll just let you continue, you know more about this than me."
"You're fine. That saves me time explaining stuff that you either don't believe in and-or already know. I'm sure my sister did a great job of convincing you."
That last line said with sarcasm so thick you could cut it with a knife.
"So you know because of said connection to the Pharaoh that you're pretty much damned to extra baggage whether you want it or not. Even without the recycled soul, the moment you got involved in Yugi's life, you wouldn't be able to escape his influence. A nasty little side effect of the Millennium Item users and anyone they remain close to."
Marik reaches over his shoulder to run his hands over the scars on his back.
"The Ishtar family have been tasked with taking care of and guarding the Pharaoh's tomb and secret since his death... Because of him, I didn't have a life of my own until I betrayed our family and left."
The blonde averts his gaze, looking down at his bed and staring through it. How much does he tell him? Should it just be a cursory explanation? It's probably best not to admit every sin he's committed right off the bat.
"In hindsight I probably should have stayed with my sister. Her business was and is far more successful and safe than my own. But I was so angry, so bitter... I wanted to do whatever I could just because, you know? To make it my life. Not some useless, enslaved tomb keeper..." He sighs. "... The taste of freedom and power went to my head."
Marik pauses for now in case Kaiba wishes to interject any before he continues.
Kaiba watches with renewed interest. He touches his back...hadn't Marik been showing something there to the others, back at the end of the tournament? Not that Kaiba had been paying attention, he'd been too busy having a tantrum about losing to the Pharaoh. But there's pain there that Kaiba can relate to....
"My childhood was a little restricted...but to be locked into that life to such a degree, feeling like you were never given a choice? It's not surprising that you'd rebel. Freedom...freedom used to be all I dreamt about, and I wasn't half as cloistered as you."
But he knows there's more to the story, so he falls silent once more. Selene snores quietly...oh, she fell asleep.
Marik chuckles sadly. "Having your fate decided the moment you're born, not letting you have any say in it... My father forbade me from ever leaving the tomb. Said that if I got a taste of the outside world, I'd only want more. Of course I wanted more! I was forced to study ancient scriptures and encantations, learn the forgotten language. Learn of the God Cards and their powers."
The blonde scoffs to himself.
"All of this in the off chance some long lost forgotten dead Pharaoh was ever to be reborn, I'd be his calling card to give him a hint on his true identity. You can imagine how boring all of that is to a child. It didn't help that Odion was more than willing to take all of that upon himself but father wouldn't allow it because he wasn't of Ishtar blood. I hoped endlessly that father would eventually choose him despite that but of course it never happened."
He shifts a bit so he can sit on the edge of the bed and lean over, hands steepled below his chin. His expression is dark and his gaze is unfocused for a moment. Chenzira looks up from his cards and sets them down, a look of worry on his little face. He hasn't seen Marik like this in a long time...
"What kind of beloved ruler forces a child of each generation to have a mural carved into his back..."
Kaiba flinches a little. That carving was what he'd glimpsed back then, right. How cruel to treat a child that way. Children are naturally curious, and to keep them restricted in a little box like that...he's reminded uncomfortably of his own childhood in certain ways.
"It wasn't fair to you. I've had pain inflicted on me to demand obedience, but for some tradition that could've been passed down any number of better ways? I'm not a fan of ritual at the best of times, but. You never should've been put through that."
The sound of Kaiba's voice snaps him back to reality and he takes a bit to process what he said as Chenzira approaches to sit nestled next to his trainer. Marik looks down at him, seeming to relax more but with a hint of shame.
"... Sorry. I... I've never told anyone about this before," he says quietly. "I don't know why I'm telling you all of this... It's not your burden to bear. I'm making this about myself again."
And he's clamming up again despite there still things that need to be told to explain why he is the way he is. He knows he should continue but... Kaiba has enough to worry about. He doesn't need to play psychiatrist for him.
Kaiba watches him and Chenzira for a moment, and...something heavy settles in his chest. He gently shifts Selene onto the pillow beside him, tucking the blanket over her so he can fully process his emotions without fear of waking her.
"It's...hm. Maybe it'll help if you know where I'm coming from."
He exhales sharply and closes his eyes. "I don't know how much you learned about me when you were...ah. Planning for Battle City, but. I wasn't always a Kaiba. I was born into a normal family and might've lived a normal life, but my mother died giving birth to Mokuba. The grief killed my father shortly after. We were bounced from relative to relative, and they spent everything our parents left us before dumping us at an orphanage."
His hand reaches up to touch the locket he wears, opening it for a moment. His brother's smiling face is enough encouragement to keep him talking.
"If you're an orphan, people think something's wrong with you. I tried to impress adults by being a good kid anyway, but I couldn't find anyone who was willing to adopt Mokuba too...until Gozaburo Kaiba came to the orphanage as a publicity stunt. I knew he wasn't going to win Father of the Year, but it was the only option to get us out of there together. I'd endure anything I had to to secure a good life for Mokuba."
He squeezes the locket in his hand, almost to the point it cuts him.
"I'd convinced him to train me as his heir. He kept us in separate wings of the mansion because seeing my little brother would distract me. He kept me in a choke collar, whipped me if I failed to ace any of my tests. Trained me to be brutal and ruthless...and when he dared me to take control of the company from him, when I played his game to perfection, he taught me his last lesson. To lose is to die. Turned out later he'd faked his death so he could attack me again later, but...seeing that was a turning point for me. I'd completely turned into his mirror image as a monster who'd stop at nothing, caring for no one. And that didn't change until the Pharaoh shattered my soul and forced me to rebuild it."
A deep exhale, and his head slumps forward, bowed over his knees. That...was a lot. "Our stories aren't the same, but...I have a long way to go too. I'm the last person who can judge."
The Egyptian listens intently, eventually looking up when Kaiba starts talking about the orphanage. It had never occurred to him, mostly because he didn't actually know how those sort of places were run, that adopting siblings together would be such a strange concept, especially with them being as close as they are.
He sacrificed so much for Mokuba to ensure they live a good life. A slow burn plan and a risky bet but it sure as hell paid off in the end. They say parents have children to become their replacements. If Gozaburo hadn't been expecting Seto not to take over the company and replacement him as head of the "dynasty" then he was a fool. Faking his own death proved that.
What an interesting coincidence that both would wind up turning into similar versions of their fathers. Marik with his rage, stubborn pride, and cruelty. Kaiba with his sharp mind, brutality, and tenacity.
The blonde gets up, scooping Chenzira up to place on his shoulder, then takes a seat next to Kaiba. He sits silent for a few moments before speaking.
This should be where he comforts him. Tells him it's alright now. That they've over come their hardships.
Instead he asks one thing in a calm voice: "... Is he gone now? Your father."
"Mm, finally," Kaiba answers carefully. "What happened was---it turned out he'd been so willing to adopt me because I resembled Noa, his biological son. My stepbrother had been fatally wounded when he was about twelve, so Gozaburo uploaded his brain into a computer...and he got so busy training me that he slowly forgot about Noa. But when I seized the company, he uploaded his own brain into the same computer and they hatched a plot for revenge."
This part is...actually important, but the details aren't, so he starts to speak a little faster.
"When we were on the blimp during Battle City, they launched their attack. Forcibly uploaded Mokuba and I into the computer, and they accidentally trapped Yugi and his friends too. Noa battled us, manipulated Mokuba, the Pharaoh had to save me yet again...turned out their plan was to eject one of their brains into my body so they could seize control of the company that way. When that failed, Gozaburo betrayed Noa and switched gears to launching nuclear strikes on the world's centers of government---Noa kept Gozaburo locked down and launched a strike on the computer to prevent that, so both their minds are gone."
It had been too much for Seto to process at the time. He'd coldly told Mokuba they needed to move on, but now...
"Gozaburo had treated Noa much more kindly than he'd ever treated Mokuba or I, but it was all a farce to control him in the end. Noa befriended Mokuba in there, and...he gave up his own chance at life to prevent Gozaburo from winning. He'd only been twelve, and he never got to truly live."
Kaiba squeezes the locket once more. "Living freely is something most people take for granted, but it's a gift. I don't want to waste it this time."
Marik... vaguely remembers some of these things happening. It's a fog though since he was half a spirit roaming around without his body. That's not something he ever wants to experience again, that's for sure. The blimp being attacked, explosions. Huh... his head hurts a bit trying to remember. Perhaps because those are his darker half's memories.
So Gozaburo did have a decent plan all along. At least until the end. Marik suppresses a smile as Kaiba tells him about how all of that came tumbling down and literally blew up in the man's face. Serves him right. What Noa did was noble in his eyes, and... hearing that he was only 12 when this all went down... maybe what Marik did wasn't... so bad? (No, it's still bad.) That's not important right now though.
Kaiba and Mokuba won't suffer at Gozaburo's hand anymore and are able to carve their own paths in life. That's good. He hesitates a bit before putting a hand on Kaiba's shoulder although he's fully expecting the other teen to swat him away.
"It... It really is. You've already done so much back home. Even here... you're going to do great things. I know it," he offers a small smile. "You've said it to me so I'm going to say it back: Don't sell yourself short. You've gone through... well, I doubt many people have gone through things as bizarrely and traumatic as we have... but the fact that you keep a calm head in most situations, that you've got a pretty clear idea of what you want in life... I'd say you're pretty well put together. Especially after the Pharaoh broke your mind. I've never heard of anyone who's survived that Shadow Power before. But you not only came back, you're even more certain of things. You always find a way to bounce back and better yourself."
"... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious of your tenacity and strength."
Kaiba reaches over to idly stroke Selene's head. The little Eevee is soft and cozy...it grounds him. And the more he's talked, the more he's felt strangely light. He knows he's carried a burden all this time, but...this strange world is a chance to live the way he chooses.
He doesn't seem to mind the supportive touch, as evidenced by the little smile on his face. It's strange to admit to himself, but he trusts Marik. They're a team. He does reach for Marik's hand...but instead of pulling it away, he grasps it.
"We were dealt bad hands, but a duelist always has tools. You have a strong team...and you have me. Don't impose limits on yourself."
He squeezes Marik's hand warmly before dropping it.
Marik is honestly surprised that Kaiba reacts in a positive manner to his touch. Neither are particularly familiar or comfortable doing those sort of things. He himself usually sees it as a sign of weakness. It's a useful tactic when trying to get someone to lower their guard. But both of them are open right now. There's nothing selfish to gain from this. It's not... weak. Being able to unload like this has helped him feel lighter, something he hasn't really felt since his split personality was banished to the Shadow Realm. It seems to have helped Kaiba as well.
The blonde grunts in agreement, looking down at the floor for a time before returning his gaze to his companion. Chenzira watches the two with a small smile. Marik's hand returns to Kaiba's shoulder.
"Thank you, Kaiba."
Speaking of duelists, if their cards are on the table right now...
"... You're the first real human friend I've had." He worded that carefully on purpose. Marik cherishes all of his pokémon, especially Chenzira, but there is still a small disconnect.
His grip tightens a bit on the other teen's shoulder out of reassurance. "I promise I won't let you down and... that I've got your back, no matter what happens."
Kaiba feels...strange. It's so weird to let Marik close to him like this, to willingly drop his guard. But they've bonded on the start of this strange journey, and away from all the drama of the past, surrounded by teams who love them...maybe they can both stretch beyond the boundaries they lived within before.
Even still, the word feels heavy on his tongue. A concept he scoffed at so many times, yet...
"You're my first human friend too," he admits softly. He'd had something with the Pharaoh by the end, and Yugi had wanted them to be friends, but...they'd never gotten there. Maybe it could've happened someday. But now he has this. Marik, teaching him the ways of the wild and encouraging him on this journey. And he wants to make sure Marik finds his dreams too. If anyone deserves freedom, it's him.
He reaches back, winding his own arm around Marik's shoulder. "You too. Looks like we're stuck together, and...I protect what's mine, including my. Friends."
It's said with an awkward little chuckle. Still getting used to that word.
It's a strange word for him as well. It sounds right when describing his team but to a person...? Hm. He hopes it didn't sound forced when he said it.
What Kaiba does and says next though causes him to stare, eyes widened and his mouth open slightly. The other teen isn't one to beat around the bush, he already knew that. And he knew about his possessiveness. But to hear it applied to him, to have that arm around him. Human contact. Human affection. Unfiltered emotions. Everything feels so muted nowadays to him. His highs and lows never last long, almost immediately mellowing out. There's a reason he's begun to stagnate while in this place although he doesn't know what it is.
This is the first time in what seems like forever that he's feeling something deeper than usual. Are those...? Ugh. No. His eyes are beginning to tear up. Of all the stupid emotions to leak through, why did it have to be this? Marik bites his lip, looking away to clench his eyes shut and to try and calm himself down. He lets out a huff and turns back to Kaiba, having recovered quickly enough, offering a slightly awkward smile.
"Yeah... Friends." A pause followed by a quiet chuckle. "... Honestly never thought I'd use that word to describe someone in my life, you know?"
Luckily, Kaiba's not experienced enough in dealing with emotions on the regular to realize what Marik is experiencing. He gently pats his friend's shoulder once more before letting go, taking a deep breath. This is real, then. They're friends.
"Think you'll be able to sleep well?" he asks, soft and just a little awkward. He's worried he might've stirred something up back there.
The Egyptian nods and moves off of Kaiba's bed, pulling the sheets back to climb into his own. Chenzira climbs over to rest on his trainer's chest and sprawl out.
He debates asking the other what he's thanking him for. He didn't really do anything in his eyes. Unless Kaiba's admitting it did him good to get that all off of his chest as well. Whatever the reason Marik smiles over at his friend, idly patting Chen's back. "Night, Kaiba."
Sept 26th: Network, after Kaiba's conversation with Atem
[Marik's been in town most of the day, oblivious to just who's arrived. He's writing down battle notes and trying to strategize for what he saw at the Violet City Gym, chilling at one of the cafés with Chenzira while Kaiba's at the beach. Deciding it's probably a good time to meet up, he gives him a ring.]
Hey. You still at the beach? Want me to grab you a smoothie or something?
[ He picks up with a little smile. It's still strange having someone whose calls he looks forward to after all this time, but he's rolling with it. ]
If you think you can get it down here before it melts. But---
[ He opens his mouth, hesitates. Everything that had happened to Marik back then had been about his family's duty to the pharaoh, right? That conversation from a few weeks ago is still clear in his mind.
When he does speak, his voice is softer. ]
There's something I have to tell you. Think you can hurry straight here?
[It's still strange even to him. He's certainly not complaining though.
And Kaiba should know by now not to egg on the blonde with time challenges. He might not have his bike but he still prides himself on getting things done well and quickly. Marik looks far too sure of himself, Chen glancing up concerned from his usual spot on his shoulder.]
Of course I can get there before it melts! What flavor do you want?
[He notices shift in tone, his own smile wavering for a second. Kaiba's been with him enough to probably see the slight twitch to the corner of his mouth.
That's a cliché, isn't it? To tell someone they need to talk to them about something and leave them a puddle of anxiety. He's fairly certain he hasn't done anything stupid as of late. Or anything at all since he arrived here. Well, except one thing. Diavolo doesn't know anything about Kaiba so it can't be that...
No, stop it. You can be upfront with him. Stop jumping at shadows that aren't there.]
[Marik visibly relaxes, his smile genuine again. That's... a huge relief that it's not something he did. Still, it's hard to keep the mind from wandering even if it's pointless until he gets there.]
Mango. Got it. I'll be there in about 5 minutes.
[And true to his word, Marik's there right on time. Because why walk when you can be carried? Once he's close enough, he hops off of Usi's back and walks briskly towards Kaiba. Chenzira floats behind, holding on to his trainer's half finished drink.
The Egyptian offers the other teen his mango smoothie before taking back his own and sits down next to him, trying his best not to get covered in sand.]
[ Kaiba accepts the drink with a little smile and nod, settling in his little paradise for the afternoon. He has a sheet laid out, but...well, sand. It gets everywhere, just what it does. ]
I'm sorry I was so vague. I didn't want you to see before I had the chance to tell you, and I thought being more specific would make you look.
[ Look at what, though...? He takes a deep breath. ]
The Pharaoh arrived in New Bark Town this morning. He's going to meet me at the tournament in a few days.
[Now, if this had been back when Marik first arrived, he wouldn't think anything of it. That's the thing though. He's thought about it. Too much, perhaps. That's what happens when you're left by yourself for an extended amount of time with only animal companions to talk to. How everyone just forgave him for everything so easily. How he didn't actually feel sorry for what he had done, just sorry that his other personality got in the way and muddied things up. Like catching a kid with their hand in the cookie jar. You know they didn't regret it. That just meant they needed to be more prepared next time.
There was one scenario he didn't really put much thought into though: How he might go about the handling of people from his world if they started showing up. He'd just convinced himself it would never happen.
But it did. Kaiba wasn't a huge inconvenience for him. Things had turned out really well between them but then again, they hadn't really directed interacted much due to him getting kicked out of his body before the Finals so outside of a few things, it's been an easy relationship to... mend? Grow? Whatever term fits it, he's not sure.
The Pharaoh on the other hand. Combine that with the fact that he has no idea what time he's from and Marik finds himself worrying far too much than he probably should be. Things will... be alright, right? Just like nothing happened. Not like he tried to kill him and his friends or steal the God Cards or anything. Right?
Marik suddenly regrets wearing a leather jacket because it feels gross on clammy skin.
He sits silent, pale (as pale as someone of his complexion can be), inner monologuing with himself for what feels like an eternity but it's only for about a minute or so.
[It isn't until Chenzira leans against him that he snaps back to reality and looks to Kaiba. His eyes look unfocused though and his voice is eerily calm and quiet.]
I see.
[Another pause, this time he taps on the top of his drink's straw.]
You might not have to, actually. He seemed to be aware of his true name, so in his timeline you likely did that already.
[ He gazes out at the sea for a few moments, then back to Marik, but that's enough for Mizuchi to jump out of the water and float over. She curls at Kaiba's feet, wanting to be near her humans. ]
He seemed pleased that we were together, so I think so.
[That is. Not something that occurred to him at all. He blinks a few times with a surprised expression. At least the panic has stopped. Marik looks down at Chenzira, the Yamask looking back up at him.
... It is strange how his luck has managed to work out in this place. His second (first?) personality was banished and he'd be able to show the Seal to the Pharaoh shortly before his arrival here. Now the Pharaoh has shown up and he... doesn't need to do anything.
He really needs to look into these pokémon Gods when he gets the chance. Marik doesn't believe in coincidence. The fact that everything has worked out surprisingly well in his favor shows something out there seems to be keeping an eye on him.
Sensing that his trainer has relaxed, Chen takes it upon himself to finish the smoothie he assumes Marik has no interest in.]
That's... That's good. That's really good.
[He manages a smile. The Egyptian is still nervous about interacting with the Pharaoh and still holds a bit of resentment for everything he'd been forced to endure as a child - but there's an odd sense of pride he feels knowing as well that in the end things do come to pass as they were meant to.
He's also thankful to Kaiba for not saying the Pharaoh's name. Marik wants to hear it from the man himself.]
... Guess I could say hello? Provided he didn't seem overwhelmed by everything.
[Marik scoops up the hiccuping Yamask and passes him along to King. Chen hangs like a ragdoll with his little tongue sticking out in exasperation. This is a terrible sensation!]
If he's regained his memories, that might explain the shift in his demeanor. I guess we're... lucky he arrived from the time he did. I would have stayed hidden if he were from any point before the tournament.
[Gods, talking about time lines is weird. Marik shakes his head.]
I'll... message him later. Once this fool-[which is somehow said with affection]-gets rid of his hiccups.
[Chen lets out a tiny groan that's interrupted by said hiccups.]
... Think we should give the Pharaoh some of our Meowth money to help him start off?
[ King is happy to take over as the Team Dad. He comforts Chenzira as best he can, patting him firmly to get everything under control. He's a slimy boy, he doesn't mind. ]
I can wire him some. I'm going up against Whitney tomorrow, and if I've prepared enough we'll have another windfall soon.
We can donate supplies in person at the tournament as well.
[ King makes a gentle shushing noise as he cuddles Chen, making sure the little guy's okay. He'll hand him back to Marik in a moment, he just wants to be absolutely sure he's fine. Kaiba watches them with a little smile as he sips his own smoothie slowly and carefully. ]
I'll go with you. Your team's really grown the last few weeks, and I'm eager to see what you do.
[ Speaking of a strong team, King hands Chenzira back to Marik. All good now! ]
[Marik leans over to take Chenzira back and slumps him over his shoulder, patting him on the back like a baby.
... He's not sure why he's surprised to hear Kaiba wants to go with him. He stares at him for a bit, at a loss of what to say at first.]
You will?
[Of course he will. Kaiba's the reason he was able to get to where he is now. Why wouldn't he want to see how much Marik's grown? It makes sense.
Still, the blonde manages a sheepish smile. He wants to make his friend proud.]
I... I appreciate it. I've been writing down some strategies while you've been at the beach. I'm thinking... by the time the tournament is over, everyone but Oba should be strong enough to use. Oba can stay with you and King to watch. If you're alright with that, that is.
I can use the extra time to catch and train a deeper bench of team members. I love my main team, but I'm thinking of raising more for different situations. And we might be able to buy more useful items at the battle convention...
[ King warbles happily at the mention of his baby brother! ]
Oh? Why not just buy TMs? That's what I was planning on doing. I want Chen, Usi, Oba, and Anippe to always be on my team. I'm not sure about my last two yet...
[He doesn't like collecting too many pokémon. Having them sit in an electric box seems... cruel even if they're in stasis like and don't mind...? It doesn't sit well with him.
Hm. If it's after the meetup... Marik shifts a bit.]
Do you think... the Pharaoh will want to... travel with us?
That's true. I believe the core of my team's going to be King, Mizuchi, Zephyra, and Leizi...but I think I'll be rotating the last two slots for different situations. I'll make sure they all get to come out and play at every town stop.
[ Mizuchi lets out a small stream of bubbles where she's curled at his feet, and he rubs her head. ]
It's possible. We can see how our meeting in person goes, and if we both agree, we could invite him. But I don't want to do it if you're not comfortable.
I'd be upset with you if you had thought about switching out King, Mizuchi, or Zephyra.
[Especially King.
Marik smile returns at Mizuchi's display even as they discuss the topic of their newly arrived acquaintance. Adversary? Colleague? Yeah, colleague sounds better. He still looks a bit uncertain but nowhere near as nervous as he was before.]
I need to get used to interacting with him eventually, right? Like ripping a bandaid off. It's better for the injury underneath in the long run. Maybe getting to know him better might help put some of my... issues to rest.
[It's a bit later in the day. Marik hasn't done or said anything out of the ordinary despite Leizi's little announcement to the network the other day. He knows Kaiba's similar to him and would rather no one make a big deal out of it, so he won't.
Still. He had gotten his friend a present. Having managed to snag the damaged coat from his pack with little notice, Marik snuck off with it a month ago to get it remade at one of the tailor shops in Goldenrod while they were there. It was finally ready and had been delivered to Azalea during their stay there forthe gym challenge. Marik kept it in his pack ever since.
Seeing as they're not doing anything particularly important right now, the Egyptian approaches Kaiba.]
Hey.
[He waits until the other looks up and holds out a nicely wrapped flat box, trying not to look sheepish. Getting items for others from a battle convention is one thing. Getting personalized gifts for someone you consider your best friend is another.]
... Here.
[Kaiba will find... inside the box is a perfect replica of his favorite white trench coat.]
[ Kaiba is unfortunately aware of what day it is, no thanks to Leizi. The Raichu has been given a party hat to wear and a stack of pancakes for dessert, and that's at least kept her occupied today. But it's been quiet on the road other than that, and Kaiba doesn't mind.
Which is why he's shocked when Marik places a present in front of him. It's big...]
Marik, you...really didn't need to...
[ But his team is gathering around the box now, curious. Kaiba sets about unwrapping it, carefully pulling out the piece of himself that had been missing all this time. He stands, folds the short replacement jacket he'd been using for the winter, and slips it on...and it fits perfectly, just like before. He laughs gently, delighted to have it back. ]
[He smiles, puffing up a little with pride. Chen softly claps his hands.]
I have my ways.
[He is a counterfeiter, after all. The coat is the real deal, or at least as true as it can get to Kaiba's original. Marik's smile widens into a grin, giving Leizi a brief glance. Sure, she dropped the info to everyone but at least she shared it with him well before then.]
[ He wishes he had a mirror. They're not near a lake this time, so he'll have to settle for posing...yeah, he'll try a lot of poses to see how it feels. His Pokémon cheer.
And he finally sits back down next to Marik, thinking a moment before reaching over to pat his arm. ]
I'm new to the whole gift thing, but...I definitely wanted to feel normal again. Thank you.
Mm. It's going to be that time in the gym challenge when people start to pay more attention soon, right? I want to make the best impression.
[ He smirks, clearly approving of the picture. ]
It's...funny. I've never really had birthday gifts before. Mokuba knew I could buy anything I wanted, so he'd just bully me into taking a day off from work so we could spend time together. And even if I'd had friends, they would've known the same.
But you filled in a missing piece. That means a lot.
[ His Pokémon chorus their agreement, and King wanders over to give everyone slimy hugs. A first test: Kaiba's old coat had been fairly resistant to most kinds of stains...and thankfully the slime slides off. He smiles. ]
[He chuckles softly. Marik doesn't know Mokuba particularly well outside of what Kaiba's told him but he can imagine the scenario perfectly.]
I understand, trust me. It's good Mokuba was able to do something for you.
[... Oh.
Marik rubs the back of his neck, his face heating up at how much this gift actually means to the other teen. To him, it's no big deal that he got him a very specific present. He's his friend and... that's why friends do, right? At least, that's what he's seen other people do.]
Y-Yeah. You and I both prefer our privacy with our personal lives so I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, especially given what Leizi did.
[He gives King a big ol' hug in return before the Goodra goes to test the new coat.]
Next time we're back in Goldenrod, I'll take you to the shop I commissioned it from. They could probably recreate anything for you.
... And then Kaiba goes and says that. If this were a Duel, that comment alone would have reduced his life points to zero. But this isn't a Duel, so instead Kaiba just gets to watch the blonde go through a wave of reactions. Anger, embarrassment, then utter defeat at such a betrayal to his delicate, easily inflated ego.]
Mmmph!
[He pinches the bridge of his nose and looks away, trying to hide his face.]
I can't believe he arrived in the same outfit I just bought...!
[It's been that embarrassing for him that he hasn't worn that particular combo since and usually keeps the jacket zipped up if he does.]
[All he's getting is just a picture of the fluffy hisuian growlithe who is currently curled up with an equally fluffy vulpix in what seems to be a Pokemon center.
That's it, that's the context. Enjoy that, Kaiba.]
They are, both refuse to go into their balls right now, but I'm not complaining. Mhmm! I finally made it to Goldenrod at least, which... seems like an easier place to get settled once things warm up.
[ It's not too long before Kaiba arrives, bundled in a navy hat, scarf, and gloves alongside his long silver coat and turtleneck. It doesn't match, but he bought his cold weather gear in a hurry.
Selene the Sylveon is tagging along with him, wearing a snug blue hat and booties. She hurries inside and rushes straight over to Kisara and the small Pokémon, humming a greeting. Her trainer follows, a little more cautiously. ]
Mm. It's good to finally see you. I would've brought one of my dragons, but they're all too big to fit in here. Selene's actually said to be a vicious dragon slayer, but she won't hurt you.
[Luckily she seems warm enough, having managed to pick up a few things here and there on her travels. Which is... far better than she was doing before, anyway. The sylveon gets a squeak of surprise as she rushes over, but the surprise subsides into a smile instead. She's adorable, that's for certain.
The growlithe and vulpix are looking up from their puddle, both seeming to yawn and stretch in sync with one another. Sadiki isn't too far from them, merely dipping his head in his own greeting before plopping himself next to his trainer. If Kaiba's paying attention, there's also a nidorino and nidorina nearby that are watching warily and a gastly hovering not too far behind Kisara.]
It certainly took long enough, didn't it? [Her tone is nothing but friendly, pausing on the words about Selene being a dragon slayer. Her hand moves to cover a laugh before she speaks again.]
Well, good thing I'm not a dragon right now, isn't it? Not that it seems I'd be able to be even if I wanted to right now. [It's still so... odd to her, feeling as if everything is locked behind a chained door that she can't have access to. But that's neither here nor there.] I'm glad you decided to stay somewhere warm for a little bit so I wouldn't have to stay concerned.
[ Selene trills happily, affectionately waving her ribbons around in greeting. She nuzzles up to Kisara for a brief moment, then prances about to look at all the gathered Pokémon. Kaiba sits near Harara and Thaelab, looking at them with a thoughtful expression...and eventually his gaze drifts over to the rest. ]
You have quite the team already. And they all chose to join you...mm, there's a chance you set a record. How's your travel going?
[The poison pair seem more keen to not be messed with as they're both finding the nearest thing to put their backs up against. It's fine, they're fine.]
Enough to where I can't have them all with me at once. [Which is terrible to her, if she had to be honest, but that's a problem she'll find some way to figure out later.
She hums briefly in thought. A record? Really, she doesn't think it's anything...]
The spirit ball behind me, I do not recall where she came from. The pair that seem... uncomfortable, they had needed help and it ended up with them coming with me. The fox, though, I suppose he saw how cold I was and refused to leave my side. [Said vulpix is looking up from his spot and just padding over to her to flop against her side that doesn't have Sadiki guarding it while the growlithe is just rolling onto his back instead.
That's hard. Now that I'm in town I can rotate them every day if I want to...I just can't fit them all in our apartment.
[ He nods to the Gastly, then the pair in the corner...and oh, the Vulpix is cute. The Growlithe is cute too. ]
Marik has a ghost like her. His evolved into a Gengar now, and he's the most destructive prankster of the group...but Pokémon from the same species can have different personalities.
[ He crouches near Harara and tentatively offers a hand to sniff...no sudden movements, not when he's flopped over like this. His other hand reaches for a small bag from MooMoo Farms that he passes to Kisara. ]
I bought some treats on the way home, I thought your team might like them. They're made with MooMoo Milk.
[She has no real idea what an apartment is, but she can take a guess the context there.]
I wonder how possible it would be to get more open space... [That's a problem for Future Her, once she figures out how to make proper money here. Which is coming, sooner rather than later.]
Oh, he does? So far Zil has been pretty... mild, though from time to time I swear something happens that can only be explained by her doing. [Said gastly is just silently laughing in the background, it's absolutely her.
Harara is just watching him like a doofus while remaining on his back, though he'll sniff at that hand before rolling back over. He's, nicely, letting Kaiba hand off that bag to Kisara before trying to tackle him with his tail wagging. This is a puppy, sir, what did you expect.]
MooMoo Milk? I'm sure it'll go over well with the-[Oh, that's about when Harara pounces and she's squeaking in surprise, oops.] Harara, that's enough! [Excuse her while she slips back into her native tongue despite the translator, sorry, Kaiba. Said dog is also not really listening.]
Ghost Pokémon can be like that on their quest to have fun. They're often misunderstood, Marik taught me that.
[ Whoa, that's an eager puppy! Kaiba catches him as he falls back, struggling to get a hold on the squirming puppy in his lap. He manages to find a rhythm to pet the dog, laughing lightly. ]
I do wonder why she picked me to follow around... [It's probably fine.
He is the most eager of puppies and will just keep squirming around until Kaiba finally figures out the petting routine and is mostly chilling out. Only enough to where it's his tail that's wagging and ten million miles an hour instead of his entire body.
Kisara's rubbing at her face in turn, okay, okay this is fine. It could be a lot worse and at least he's laughing about it.]
Yes. I assume because he's... pretty much a puppy, but I also don't know if that applies here. [Since eggs. And pokemon. And all that nonsense.]
[ He's sweet. Kaiba resigns himself to being licked to death, and it's...not so bad. This puppy had been in the egg he'd sent...and now he was safely hatched, and protecting his trainer. All was well. ]
Young Pokémon are usually hyper like any other child. Most settle down when they evolve, but sometimes they can develop an attitude problem. But it's all in how you raise them.
[ He looks over at the wary duo and nods. ]
King went through a moody teenager phase in his second evolution, actually, but he's the team caretaker now. And Selene here likes to help him out.
[ The Sylveon, ever the happy peace-loving creature, is sniffing around curiously and radiating her calming aura. ]
[He's doing a rather good job of it, if the fact that he's ignoring his trainer to lick every part of Kaiba he can get to is any indication. But he's still young and at least not the only protection/fire type she has access to at this point.]
Mm, I suppose that makes sense... He still has quite a way to go, but I have no doubt he'll eventually mature and become a lovely protector. [Even if she has her doubts currently, there's hardly a mean bone in her body, so him developing an attitude problem is highly unlikely at this point.
The duo in turn have at least mostly moved away from where they were to instead tuck themselves behind Kisara, still eyeing Kaiba warily.]
Really...? [She wouldn't have guessed that by what she'd seen of King, but she's reaching a hand out to scratch behind the nidorina's ear in particular as she's the closest one and it seems the nidorino isn't particularly fussed by being ignored in the action.]
I'm hoping these two become less wary of people, but I... have a feeling it's going to take some time. They're absolutely lovely to me, but... [Everyone else is the problem. As he's probably already noticing.]
It would make sense that they have as much personality as a person can have and I'm well aware of the differences between how people can be. [For... better or for worse, but she knows she doesn't have to say that aloud at this point. It's all been obvious and laid bare from what she can remember or has heard from others.
It's fine, he'll survive. Since Harara's at least chilling out somewhat to make himself comfortable on Kaiba's lap instead.]
I don't see why not, if that's one of the things people do here. From what I've heard and read so far, it doesn't seem like what breeding I've heard about is like. [Which is a lot better that it not be, if she were perfectly honest. Some of that was a little questionable in her book and if the Pokemon wanted to do it, then who's she to stop them?]
Though I think I might have an idea of something else to work with, as well, if it can be obtained here. Might... be a little hard given the growing conditions for it, but you never know.
[He's a happy wiggly boy and will take his pets, thank you very much.]
Temperate? [Look, some words she's not familiar with here, Kaiba.] Oh! Well, with how many, ah, canines I seem to be obtaining, it reminded me of something that I would see in the desert sometimes. There would be people racing or hunting with hounds and would use a henna paste to protect them from the conditions and for dying, if they were a light enough color. But given how much the Pokemon seem to battle, I don't see why it wouldn't be a good idea to try and mitigate as much damage as possible to them after.
Viridian City, after Kaiba's Mt. Silver expedition
[Although the two have been in correspondence throughout his journey, Marik's very happy to have Kaiba return to civilization again after so long. Sure, he knows the brunette is fully capable of taking care of himself but he still worries. As soon as he spots the other Marik rushes over, followed by Oba and Chen.
Before the tomb keeper can throw his arms around his friend, Oba flings himself at Kaiba instead. Right for his face. So he can get sloppy Goomy kisses.]
... Oba! I told you not to jump on him!
[Too busy smooching and nuzzling.
Marik shakes his head before returning his attention to the other.]
How was your trip back down?
Re: Viridian City, after Kaiba's Mt. Silver expedition
[ Well, that was a big jump for a small Goomy. Kaiba sputters, but catches Oba and lets him have his fun for a moment. King's following right behind to lumber over and hug Marik and Chen, and then they switch. King scoops up his baby brother with a little laugh, leaving Seto free to (carefully) hug Marik and Chen. So much slime. ]
It was easier than the way up. Aura took us for a glide down whenever we were outside.
[ The Altaria trills and flaps her wings, eager to swoop in and wipe the slime. She'll get her turn soon. ]
[Marik laughs and happily returns the hug to King, as does Chenzira. It's been too long since he had a good Goodra hug.
There is a lot of slime but he doesn't mind one bit. It's not like he doesn't deal with it every day. He gives Kaiba a hearty pat on the back when it's his turn to exchange hugs with him, grinning.
Oba is practically sobbing from how happy he is to see big brother King! It's been so long!]
That's good. I'm glad you made it back safely.
I've been well. The construction over in Lavender and researching the breeder's book has me pretty busy but things have been going really smoothly.
You need to tell me all about your journey now that we aren't dealing with limited signal over the network! Or, uh. We could do that while we eat if you'd prefer.
[ Hugs all around for his little family. Aura fusses and manages to wipe most of the slime from Seto's cheek, but he has to convince her to relent. Soon enough they're on their way. King carries Oba on his shell, just like old times. ]
Mm. Breeding life suits you more, huh? I've learned more about it while helping Kisara, and you know I'll help you too.
As for us...it was tough. Weeks without being able to resupply, I just managed to ration everything appropriately. But the hardest part was the battles. The wild Pokémon and trainers were the toughest I ever faced, and we lost a good handful of battles. But they're stronger, and I'm proud of them.
[ King murmurs his happy agreement now that he's well-rested and back with his family. ]
[Best family Marik could ask for in this place. No offense to Odion and Ishizu, of course. Marik snickers at Aura's attempt to clean off her trainer and Oba is happy to be back in his usual spot. Today is a good day in his eyes!]
Eh, mostly for the Cyclizar. I want this world to enjoy the closest thing we can have to motorcycles. I feel bad always asking everyone to breed clutches for me... I'll take you up on your offer though if I can't quite make sense of things.
[Marik listens intently, imagining the different battles Kaiba might have faced and how epic they should have looked, even if he'd lost.]
Really? They're that tough? I suppose that makes sense since it's part of Victory Road but... it's still surprising to hear.
[ His eyes light up as he talks about the Pokémon. ]
Most of the dragons I hadn't encountered yet were up there. I caught as many as I could, for starters for Kisara's business. They were awe-inspiring.
[ They near the Pokémon Center, and he stops to call Kisara for one special pick-up. His team was already treated at the center at the base of the mountain, so everything's fine. But he did want to bring one special girl over.
Sakuma pops out of her ball! She spots Oba and King and hops excitedly, begging her papa to pick her up. He does so with a grin, bringing her up to greet Oba. Kaiba rubs her head fondly. ]
We missed you too. I can't wait to get home. And Marik, you need to come see us sometime. The whole house is a dragon nursery.
[The blonde smiles when he sees that light in Kaiba's eyes.]
That's awesome! I can't wait to see all the different ones you managed to catch.
[Oh, Sakuma. No matter how many times Marik sees her, she never stops being aggressively cute. Oba gurgles happily and hops around on King's shell while the tomb keeper leans over to also join in on the patting of the baby's head.
Still leaned over, Marik looks up at Kaiba with a big grin.]
... The whole house? I think... Hmm... I'll have to get through the Ice Path, won't I? I wonder if Chafu can handle the cold if he walks rather than using his wheels... How was your trek through it or did you just Surf around?
It'll be a little easier now that it's warming up.
We just walked very slowly. I let Zephyra out to help warm us up whenever the ground was stable enough.
[ Sakuma soon demands to see her trainer, and Kaiba takes his turn cuddling her. She lets out a happy 'goo!' and off they go. ]
It's a nice cottage. Nothing mansion-sizes, but there's plenty of room inside and out for the dragons to roam. Most nights are cloudy, but on a clear night we can see falling stars and Miniors. Sometimes we even get visiting Goomy at the pond.
Hmm... I'm just concerned about the amount of time it might take. The construction on the shop is about half way done so I don't want to be gone for too long. I guess as long as I have service that should be alright...
[Hhhh. Visiting Goomys. Okay. Maybe if he rushes through the route he can make it in decent time.
Challenge accepted.]
Alright. That settles it. Tomorrow I'll teleport over to Ecruteak and start heading towards Blackthorn. I'll keep you posted on how far I've gotten every day.
[As they enter the more downtown area, Marik looks around at the different businesses.]
[Marik slings an arm over Kaiba's shoulder and waves his other to show the array of shops available to them.]
Kaiba, Kaiba. You're allowed to be greedy with me. We could go for surf and turf if you wanted. If you want pub food though, I can work with that. A pity neither of us are old enough to drink... We both deserve a toast to our success! You in particular for your journey as a trainer. You've beaten Johto, got a dragon ranch, and traversed Mt. Silver!
[He looks around, trying to decide which place looks the best.]
So are burger and fries what you want to go with? We could go with that place right there.
[Looks more classy than an average sports bar. Some place you'd see a local band play at on the weekends, sort of like a microbrewery.]
Start a business. Then you don't need to worry about age.
[Marik chuckles.]
Pub food is definitely the way to go if you want that.
[They walk into the pub and get a table big enough for them and their pokemon. Marik sits down and waits until Kaiba's comfortable before answering his question.]
I haven't yet. You're far better with advertisement... Got any tips for me?
[ Pub sounds good! King looks pleased, and Kaiba is definitely ready to fill up. Sakuma just wobbles curiously, not yet having tasted greasy wonders. ]
Mm. Your main selling point is speed, right? And you want the Cyclizar to look as sleek as possible. I'd find a flat stretch of land to shoot on...the lands around Lavender should be fine. Climb up on a flying Pokémon and film it running from the air. It'll take some trial and error to get the angle right, but it'll catch eyes.
[Oba doesn't get to indulge in greasy food much either but he burbles happily to Sakuma to tell her she's in for a treat! They can share a dish!]
Hmm... Maybe Chen can record it while I ride Chafu? To show they're safe and easy to handle for people to ride. That's part of why I picked Lavender. You've got the Cycling Road off to the west, and then the Bridge of Silence to the east. Cyclizar can stop on a dime and are much better at navigating the docks than a bicycle.
[Save him from making a truly cringey commercial that won't kill his player from second hand embarrassment, Kaiba.]
Mm. We could film on the docks. We could go late afternoon after the fishermen leave, so we don't disturb their catches. Sunset lighting would be tricky, but if it worked...
[ Everyone's happy! The delicious smells fill the air, and he's definitely pleased with this. ]
The image you're selling needs to be as attractive as possible. It might take a few shoots, but we'll get it done.
That way it can show the Cyclizar's ability to maneuver. Hmm... Maybe a short intro explaining the point of the Dealership then cut to being on the docks?
[Oba burbles at Marik to let him "read" the menu even if he doesn't know how to read and can only tell by the photos.]
Eh? Don't worry. I know what to get you, Sakuma, and King to split.
[ Kaiba's still busy, preparing for his final gym challenge push, but training's going well with his newer team members. At least he thinks it is. He makes it a habit to check in on their home daily as the breeding project progresses.
So it's time to call Kisara. Ring, ring. ]
...I'm on my way back. Has Kuri made any more holes in the walls?
[Sir. You know the answer to this question when she picks up and she looks a little more frazzled than normal, especially when there is a haxorus currently sitting on Kuri and looking rather annoyed about this fact.
[It must be nice to be able to travel and not have to worry about your shitty little dragon!!!! Except she wouldn't call Kuri shitty, probably. Even if Khanajr would disagree entirely. Especially given she's huffing and shifting to make sure she has the little dragon pinned properly but can still breathe.]
It should? I know that helped when Sahalia was a baby, at least? Even if she still has her... moments... [Said t-rex is squinting at her now, but shifts to settle into a curled up ball instead. It's fine, she's just Like This.]
[ They dive and he yelps, and...soon enough they crash in the garden outside. A few Goomy scurry into the bushes. He's still on the phone as he coughs and tries to recover, so. ]
You can let her out in the yard. Don't worry, I can take her.
[Excuse her a moment while she flinches at that landing, good grief. But she's moving to stand and open the door to the yard, which is... not just the tiny dragon but also the large hisuian arcanine that is beelining his way towards Seto.
Harara at least has enough control of himself to slow down as he gets closer to just normally tackle into the pair to try and pin to ground and lick.]
[At least he's a big dog that knows how big he is and didn't just ram into him full speed. His tail thumps against the ground as his ear is scratched, luckily content with that after a moment or two and moving to let him up and sit properly nearby.
Kisara's biting back a laugh at this point, taking the bag with a small bit of a hum.]
I should probably get the warps for them at some point, but this'll absolutely help put more on the babies~ [Not that she's entirely sure who the next breeding pairs should be, she's still working on that. Other than her nido pair who just kind of do whatever they want at this point.] I'm guessing your travel and training went good other than coming back to... this?
[ He sits up and gently helps Aura fluff her feathers. She sings softly, and he is calmed by her presence. He then lets Selene out of her ball, and the Sylveon does her best to cast her calming song. ]
...I should leave Selene here when I'm away. She's the best at wrangling dragons.
I'm guessing "we" is you and your team? [Is she teasing him? Just a tiiiiiny bit, but if she didn't then who would she be, really? Harara is yawning a bit at the song, but that's not necessarily uncommon with him.
Though Khanajr is slowly making her way outside finally and just standing at Kisara's side, still just a biiiit taller than her. And a lot calmer than she used to be as a moody teenager. What a surprise.]
That might not be a bad idea since I think Khanajr is getting tired of her duties as babysitter. Which is... honestly still funny in hindsight. [That the once mischievous screaming baby is now a calm adult.]
...I'm sorry. I really thought leaving her with a dragon pack would help her calm down.
[ Speaking of...there's Kuri right on cue, charging right at her trainer to headbutt him. It's his turn to wrestle, and he does so...though Selene watches just in case. ]
You all did well. Dig to the bottom of the bag.
[ He's brought some treats for Kisara's team from Pallet Town's bakery. ]
It normally would, though I think Kuri just has a ton of energy either way. [Oh jeeze. Khanajr is rolling her eyes with a loud huff at the whole wrestling business, she's already at the end of her rope.
But she perks up at the mention of digging to the bottom of the bag, peering over Kisara's shoulder to watch her dig and produce treats.
And is immediately placated the second Kisara's offering her one and wandering back inside.]
[ Oh, Kuri's getting tough. She might evolve soon. He wrestles and wrestles the little ankle-biter, and when she finally seems to tire, he finally offers her a treat. Good girl. ]
Don't worry about our dinner, I have that covered too. I thought we could try a restaurant.
After the needy baby stage and the moody teenager stage, I'm fine with her being easily placated. [She's come such a long way and it's honestly impressive to see. The same can be said of the moody t-rex, but that's another story entirely.
She does seem a little shocked at the restaurant comment, though.]
... Really? I guess a little relaxation after a trip and chaos wouldn't be a bad idea. [For as long as she's been here and become accustomed to the fact she can take things, it's still a little odd!]
... I highly doubt she'll be worse than Khanajr. [There's is very little worse than a fraxure from what she's read, but Kuri might beat her out yet. They'll see.
Hopefully not in the worst ways possible.]
... Mmm~ Nothing I can really think of? I'm just happy to not have to be babysitting and cooking tonight, honestly. [It's a lot of work, okay! Especially wrangling baby dragons and annoyed adult dragons.]
Barbecue sounds lovely~ [Even if she should. Probably. Figure out who of her team is even small enough to be inside a building. Such is the problem with some dragons and even one of her dogs is probably too large to be too comfortable. Oh well, it's fine.
Luckily she's smiling in turn, the disheveled mess at least being placated for the time being. She'll sleep well tonight, that's for certain.]
I... haven't really looked into fairies all that much. So I can't say just yet, but it's not a bad idea. [It's not like she doesn't already have Pokemon that aren't dragons, after all.]
[Excuse you two, there is a very offended noise from the nearby water of one Bahr who is pouting.
Oh, right.
The water rabbit.]
... Huh. I suppose you are part fairy, aren't you? Not that you really do much to stop the problems, pretty sure you fan them. [You know what, that's fair. And he's going from offended to grinning. Awful creature.]
A cake-like Pokemon actually sounds pretty interesting, I'll have to look into it~ ... And are you really surprised about Selene, Seto? [Even she knows.]
[He can give him a Look all he wants, Bahr is more than happy ignoring it and paying attention to Selene instead. Hello friend who is not a dragon!!!]
She certainly seems happy enough about it. [Not that she knew her as an eevee, but she's still pretty certain that's the case.]
Let's see... [She's tapping her chin as she runs through a list of things she had needed. Or, well, what she might need in this case.] So faaaaar I don't think I need anything, I'm still working on what pairings might be best to encourage since each have their own personality types. Khanajr, for instance, is being a little stubborn about the whole thing.
No wonder there aren't many specialized dragon breeders. They're so stubbon. But we'll just have to be creative and work hard to make them comfortable.
[Kaiba gets a call and when he answers, he's greeted to the sight of Marik pacing angrily, muttering under his breath. Before the other teen can even speak, the tomb keeper whips towards the feed and begins hissing loudly through gritted teeth.]
Can you believe the audacity?! Did you see that interview?! How dare the natives do this to me! I- I'll-
[Kaiba is then treated to a barrage of very angry sounding Arabic words which eventually shifts into ancient Egyptian - and that's when the other teenager can understand him fully thanks to soul and rebirth shenanigans combined with the lessons Marik gave him. It's a very... colorful speech. Filled with very nice things being said about the raceway and the owner.
Really, it's just him cursing very creatively and wishing various curses on everyone. All while pacing madly back and forth. Chen watches him from the futon with a frown. Not even he can blame his trainer for being so upset.
This goes on for about a minute or so before he finally simmers down, panting from his long rant and shaking slightly with angry.]
... Sorry. I needed to get that off my chest. I'm just so... Ghhhhh....
September 14th: Zephyr Badge Get!

"I knew you could do it!"
no subject
She earned it today.
no subject
Marik follows next to Kaiba as they head to the Poké Center, still grinning widely, even laughing at the static that effects the other teen's hair.
"You were really in synch with your pokémon. If all of your battles are going to be this good I might never leave your side. That even got my adrenaline pumping!"
no subject
Yes, let's all stay together!
no subject
Oba vibrates happily on top of King, absolutely estatic about everything going on and not knowing what to do about it.
no subject
And I'll keep up so I don't hold you back."
no subject
Nothing too personal but little glimpses into his past and his thoughts on things here and there.
no subject
And there's always a one-two punch...hm, we'll be unstoppable."
no subject
"As long as you don't mind. I'm not... the greatest tag team partner."
He briefly thinks back to when poor Bakura fell victim to his terrible advice during their Shadow Game with his darker self.
"... So it might be better for me to let you lead and I act as backup. At least until get more familiar with the tactics." He sighs. "I don't like... having to depend on someone so much so I'll do my best to learn quickly."
no subject
"Oh, you will. We'll practice before we start a battle that matters, and...I believe in you and your team. Your team has so much power and potential."
He looks out at their Pokémon playing, and an older memory comes to mind. "I managed to trust my most bitter rival, the Pharaoh, in a tag team duel more than once. If I can do it with him, we'll be fine."
Hm...maybe another tactic? He could recruit the team in his effort to bolster Marik. With that in mind, he tries to catch Chenzira's eye and smile.
no subject
I'm not really sure..."
no subject
But how can he help him to be more confident? He closes his eyes in thought for a moment, breathing in and out...and as he opens them and looks up, his eyes drift to the further away Pokémon. He sees King and Anippe happily playing with Oba, and the little slug family reminds him of something important.
"...If you don't believe me, try asking your team. I think I know what their answer will be," he says softly.
no subject
Or never. That works too.
no subject
It's okay.
no subject
"... How much do you know about the Millennium Items?"
no subject
"I know...they were created by a massacre in a desperate attempt to stop an even worse outcome. That the Rod was originally held by the priest who I'm allegedly a reincarnation of, and the Puzzle contained the Pharaoh's soul. They all have powers that can be used for good or ill..."
But he doesn't want to hurt Marik, so he adds: "But hey, I managed to do plenty of damage without one. And...I'll just let you continue, you know more about this than me."
no subject
Marik pauses for now in case Kaiba wishes to interject any before he continues.
no subject
"My childhood was a little restricted...but to be locked into that life to such a degree, feeling like you were never given a choice? It's not surprising that you'd rebel. Freedom...freedom used to be all I dreamt about, and I wasn't half as cloistered as you."
But he knows there's more to the story, so he falls silent once more. Selene snores quietly...oh, she fell asleep.
no subject
"What kind of beloved ruler forces a child of each generation to have a mural carved into his back..."
cw: child abuse from here on out
"It wasn't fair to you. I've had pain inflicted on me to demand obedience, but for some tradition that could've been passed down any number of better ways? I'm not a fan of ritual at the best of times, but. You never should've been put through that."
no subject
"... Sorry.
He doesn't need to play psychiatrist for him.
cw: adding parental death to that...
I'm the last person who can judge."
no subject
Your father."
no subject
I don't want to waste it this time."
no subject
"... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious of your tenacity and strength."
no subject
He doesn't seem to mind the supportive touch, as evidenced by the little smile on his face. It's strange to admit to himself, but he trusts Marik. They're a team. He does reach for Marik's hand...but instead of pulling it away, he grasps it.
"We were dealt bad hands, but a duelist always has tools. You have a strong team...and you have me. Don't impose limits on yourself."
He squeezes Marik's hand warmly before dropping it.
no subject
The blonde grunts in agreement, looking down at the floor for a time before returning his gaze to his companion. Chenzira watches the two with a small smile. Marik's hand returns to Kaiba's shoulder.
"Thank you, Kaiba."
Speaking of duelists, if their cards are on the table right now...
"... You're the first real human friend I've had." He worded that carefully on purpose. Marik cherishes all of his pokémon, especially Chenzira, but there is still a small disconnect.
His grip tightens a bit on the other teen's shoulder out of reassurance. "I promise I won't let you down and... that I've got your back, no matter what happens."
no subject
Still getting used to that word.
no subject
"... Honestly never thought I'd use that word to describe someone in my life, you know?"
no subject
"Think you'll be able to sleep well?" he asks, soft and just a little awkward. He's worried he might've stirred something up back there.
no subject
"Better than I have in years, I think. How about you?"
Kaiba helped him immensely today. He hopes... that he was able to return the favor, even if just a little.
no subject
"...I'll be fine. Make sure you get your rest now before we hit the road again."
And he'll carefully crawl into bed beside Selene, laughing as the little Eevee snuggles up to him. Everything's surprisingly fine.
"Good night you two. And...thanks."
no subject
He debates asking the other what he's thanking him for. He didn't really do anything in his eyes. Unless Kaiba's admitting it did him good to get that all off of his chest as well. Whatever the reason Marik smiles over at his friend, idly patting Chen's back. "Night, Kaiba."
Sept 26th: Network, after Kaiba's conversation with Atem
Hey. You still at the beach? Want me to grab you a smoothie or something?
no subject
If you think you can get it down here before it melts. But---
[ He opens his mouth, hesitates. Everything that had happened to Marik back then had been about his family's duty to the pharaoh, right? That conversation from a few weeks ago is still clear in his mind.
When he does speak, his voice is softer. ]
There's something I have to tell you. Think you can hurry straight here?
no subject
Yeah. Is everything alright?
no subject
Mango. And you didn't do anything wrong, we're fine. Just hurry, all right?
no subject
Mango.
So what's up...?
no subject
I'm sorry I was so vague. I didn't want you to see before I had the chance to tell you, and I thought being more specific would make you look.
[ Look at what, though...? He takes a deep breath. ]
The Pharaoh arrived in New Bark Town this morning. He's going to meet me at the tournament in a few days.
1/2
He really shouldn't be worried.]
no subject
I see.
[Another pause, this time he taps on the top of his drink's straw.]
... Is he doing well?
no subject
[ He still needs to figure out what's going on with the man's Pokémon. ]
I...just thought you might not want to talk to him. I slipped, so he knows you're here---but I can run interference if you want me to.
no subject
No, you're...
[He takes a deep breath and slowly exhales.]
You're fine. It's not that I don't want to speak to him. I have to help him with his memories anyways.
[That's literally his purpose. No point in fighting it.]
I just...
[Time to absent-mindedly stir the smoothie while Chen climbs into his lap.]
... Is he... alright with me?
no subject
[ He gazes out at the sea for a few moments, then back to Marik, but that's enough for Mizuchi to jump out of the water and float over. She curls at Kaiba's feet, wanting to be near her humans. ]
He seemed pleased that we were together, so I think so.
no subject
Provided he didn't seem overwhelmed by everything.
no subject
He'll probably be fine. His starter's a Sigilyph...fitting, I suppose. It just orbits around him all day, apparently.
He seemed to be in a good mood. We'll be fine.
no subject
Marik chuckles at the description.]
I think I briefly saw one of those when I was at the Ruins. That is... really fitting for him.
[There's a hiccup from his lap. Marik doesn't even need to look down to know what happened.]
I told you not to drink too fast.
[And without missing a beat he continues his conversation with Kaiba.]
... Huh. It's odd picturing him in a good mood. I've only ever seen him be serious and commanding.
no subject
It was strange for me too. We've never exactly been on great terms, but he seemed happy to see me. Maybe he can take the time to loosen up too.
We'll find out what's going on in a few days together, I guess.
no subject
If he's regained his memories, that might explain the shift in his demeanor. I guess we're... lucky he arrived from the time he did. I would have stayed hidden if he were from any point before the tournament.
[Gods, talking about time lines is weird. Marik shakes his head.]
I'll... message him later. Once this fool-[which is somehow said with affection]-gets rid of his hiccups.
[Chen lets out a tiny groan that's interrupted by said hiccups.]
... Think we should give the Pharaoh some of our Meowth money to help him start off?
no subject
I can wire him some. I'm going up against Whitney tomorrow, and if I've prepared enough we'll have another windfall soon.
We can donate supplies in person at the tournament as well.
no subject
Alright. That works.
[He smiles.]
I'm really looking forward to watching the match. I know it'll be just as awesome as your previous one in Violet.
[Marik looks over at Chen for a moment then back to Kaiba.]
I think... after the tournament, I'll finally try my hand at challenging Falkner.
no subject
I'll go with you. Your team's really grown the last few weeks, and I'm eager to see what you do.
[ Speaking of a strong team, King hands Chenzira back to Marik. All good now! ]
no subject
If you're alright with that, that is.
no subject
I can use the extra time to catch and train a deeper bench of team members. I love my main team, but I'm thinking of raising more for different situations. And we might be able to buy more useful items at the battle convention...
[ King warbles happily at the mention of his baby brother! ]
Don't worry, we'll look after him.
no subject
[He doesn't like collecting too many pokémon. Having them sit in an electric box seems... cruel even if they're in stasis like and don't mind...? It doesn't sit well with him.
Hm. If it's after the meetup... Marik shifts a bit.]
Do you think... the Pharaoh will want to... travel with us?
no subject
[ Mizuchi lets out a small stream of bubbles where she's curled at his feet, and he rubs her head. ]
It's possible. We can see how our meeting in person goes, and if we both agree, we could invite him. But I don't want to do it if you're not comfortable.
no subject
[Especially King.
Marik smile returns at Mizuchi's display even as they discuss the topic of their newly arrived acquaintance. Adversary? Colleague? Yeah, colleague sounds better. He still looks a bit uncertain but nowhere near as nervous as he was before.]
I need to get used to interacting with him eventually, right? Like ripping a bandaid off. It's better for the injury underneath in the long run. Maybe getting to know him better might help put some of my... issues to rest.
no subject
[ He smiles. That...feels about right. ]
October 25th: Birthday Present
Getting personalized gifts for someone you consider your best friend is another.]
... Here.
[Kaiba will find... inside the box is a perfect replica of his favorite white trench coat.]
no subject
Which is why he's shocked when Marik places a present in front of him. It's big...]
Marik, you...really didn't need to...
[ But his team is gathering around the box now, curious. Kaiba sets about unwrapping it, carefully pulling out the piece of himself that had been missing all this time. He stands, folds the short replacement jacket he'd been using for the winter, and slips it on...and it fits perfectly, just like before. He laughs gently, delighted to have it back. ]
How did you pull this off?
no subject
[He smiles, puffing up a little with pride. Chen softly claps his hands.]
I have my ways.
[He is a counterfeiter, after all. The coat is the real deal, or at least as true as it can get to Kaiba's original. Marik's smile widens into a grin, giving Leizi a brief glance. Sure, she dropped the info to everyone but at least she shared it with him well before then.]
How does it fit?
no subject
[ He wishes he had a mirror. They're not near a lake this time, so he'll have to settle for posing...yeah, he'll try a lot of poses to see how it feels. His Pokémon cheer.
And he finally sits back down next to Marik, thinking a moment before reaching over to pat his arm. ]
I'm new to the whole gift thing, but...I definitely wanted to feel normal again. Thank you.
no subject
[Marik makes sure to snap a picture with his pokégear of a particularly epic pose and shows it to Kaiba once he sits down.]
You don't... need to thank me. I know you liked that coat so... I thought that would make the perfect gift.
[He debates saying happy birthday but... he figures Kaiba knows.]
I can't wait to see you at the next gym in that.
no subject
[ He smirks, clearly approving of the picture. ]
It's...funny. I've never really had birthday gifts before. Mokuba knew I could buy anything I wanted, so he'd just bully me into taking a day off from work so we could spend time together. And even if I'd had friends, they would've known the same.
But you filled in a missing piece. That means a lot.
[ His Pokémon chorus their agreement, and King wanders over to give everyone slimy hugs. A first test: Kaiba's old coat had been fairly resistant to most kinds of stains...and thankfully the slime slides off. He smiles. ]
You nailed everything.
no subject
They could probably recreate anything for you.
no subject
[ Leizi just laughs some more. Seto shakes his head, but he looks interested in Marik's offer. ]
If I can save up for it, I might commission more pieces...I've been thinking about color coordinating with my team, or at least my aces.
[ He stands next to King, takes in the shades of lavender and grey. ]
But a project like that's going to be for the elite battles. When I become a champion, I want to make sure it's never forgotten.
no subject
He lowers his hand from his neck and waves it dismissively at Kaiba.]
I'm sure you can save up for it.
[Or he can do it. That works too. Bahiti isn't leaving his team any time soon.
Hmm. He could get that nice sleeveless hoodie commissioned for the summer...]
That sounds perfect. I can't wait to see what you come up. I'm sure King will be thrilled that you'll match him.
[Oba too! He zips around them. Triplets!]
no subject
You could craft a solid outfit in Chenzira's colors. And you wouldn't have to worry so much about wearing the same thing as Atem.
1/2
[It's been that embarrassing for him that he hasn't worn that particular combo since and usually keeps the jacket zipped up if he does.]
no subject
... Gold, red, and black would look nice. Maybe some purples for Usi.
no subject
...ah. Guess I owe you an apology. Technically you were here first, so he should've been the one to change.
But you'd look great. Personal style's important in competition.
no subject
No. ... You don't. More than one person is allowed to wear the same thing, I know that.
[An exasperated sigh because it's Marik.]
... Thanks though.
[Finally he smiles.]
I wonder if there's a color you don't look good in. Do you have any?
[Spill the details, Kaiba. Inquiring minds wish to know.]
no subject
Probably not yellow. Or orange. Sorry, Leizi.
[ The Raichu squeaks indignantly, but it's okay! She'll just snuggle up again. ]
Should I be worried about this question?
no subject
... Yeah, those would be... hard to make work. I guess it would depend on the shade and what you paired it with.
[He chuckles.]
Nah. No ulterior motives, I swear. Not this time, at least. I was just curious.
Text
That's it, that's the context. Enjoy that, Kaiba.]
Text
They look cozy. You found a safe place to wait out the storms too?
no subject
They are, both refuse to go into their balls right now, but I'm not complaining. Mhmm! I finally made it to Goldenrod at least, which... seems like an easier place to get settled once things warm up.
no subject
I live in an apartment nearby. May I stop by and meet them?
no subject
Absolutely! I did pick up quite a few new additions, all without battling, still.

->action
Selene's actually said to be a vicious dragon slayer, but she won't hurt you.
no subject
But that's neither here nor there.] I'm glad you decided to stay somewhere warm for a little bit so I wouldn't have to stay concerned.
no subject
You have quite the team already. And they all chose to join you...mm, there's a chance you set a record. How's your travel going?
no subject
It's fine, they're just like this.]
no subject

Said dog is also not really listening.]
no subject
[ Whoa, that's an eager puppy! Kaiba catches him as he falls back, struggling to get a hold on the squirming puppy in his lap. He manages to find a rhythm to pet the dog, laughing lightly. ]
Is he always like this?
no subject
He is the most eager of puppies and will just keep squirming around until Kaiba finally figures out the petting routine and is mostly chilling out. Only enough to where it's his tail that's wagging and ten million miles an hour instead of his entire body.
Kisara's rubbing at her face in turn, okay, okay this is fine. It could be a lot worse and at least he's laughing about it.]
Yes. I assume because he's... pretty much a puppy, but I also don't know if that applies here. [Since eggs. And pokemon. And all that nonsense.]
no subject
Young Pokémon are usually hyper like any other child. Most settle down when they evolve, but sometimes they can develop an attitude problem. But it's all in how you raise them.
[ He looks over at the wary duo and nods. ]
King went through a moody teenager phase in his second evolution, actually, but he's the team caretaker now. And Selene here likes to help him out.
[ The Sylveon, ever the happy peace-loving creature, is sniffing around curiously and radiating her calming aura. ]
no subject
As he's probably already noticing.]
no subject
[ Selene trills happily and nuzzles up behind him. He's just...getting lovingly attacked to death now. ]
Were you still interested in breeding?
no subject
It's fine, he'll survive. Since Harara's at least chilling out somewhat to make himself comfortable on Kaiba's lap instead.]
I don't see why not, if that's one of the things people do here. From what I've heard and read so far, it doesn't seem like what breeding I've heard about is like. [Which is a lot better that it not be, if she were perfectly honest. Some of that was a little questionable in her book and if the Pokemon wanted to do it, then who's she to stop them?]
Though I think I might have an idea of something else to work with, as well, if it can be obtained here. Might... be a little hard given the growing conditions for it, but you never know.
no subject
...mm, growing in winter is hard, but there's a temperate climate on the Sevii Islands if you want to try there. What were you planning on growing?
no subject
How have you been?
no subject
There is a lot of slime but he doesn't mind one bit. It's not like he doesn't deal with it every day. He gives Kaiba a hearty pat on the back when it's his turn to exchange hugs with him, grinning.
Oba is practically sobbing from how happy he is to see big brother King! It's been so long!]
That's good. I'm glad you made it back safely.
I've been well. The construction over in Lavender and researching the breeder's book has me pretty busy but things have been going really smoothly.
You need to tell me all about your journey now that we aren't dealing with limited signal over the network! Or, uh. We could do that while we eat if you'd prefer.
no subject
no subject
Eh, mostly for the Cyclizar. I want this world to enjoy the closest thing we can have to motorcycles. I feel bad always asking everyone to breed clutches for me... I'll take you up on your offer though if I can't quite make sense of things.
[Marik listens intently, imagining the different battles Kaiba might have faced and how epic they should have looked, even if he'd lost.]
Really? They're that tough? I suppose that makes sense since it's part of Victory Road but... it's still surprising to hear.
What sort of pokémon did you see up there?
no subject
The whole house is a dragon nursery.
no subject
That's awesome! I can't wait to see all the different ones you managed to catch.
[Oh, Sakuma. No matter how many times Marik sees her, she never stops being aggressively cute. Oba gurgles happily and hops around on King's shell while the tomb keeper leans over to also join in on the patting of the baby's head.
Still leaned over, Marik looks up at Kaiba with a big grin.]
... The whole house? I think... Hmm... I'll have to get through the Ice Path, won't I? I wonder if Chafu can handle the cold if he walks rather than using his wheels... How was your trek through it or did you just Surf around?
no subject
We just walked very slowly. I let Zephyra out to help warm us up whenever the ground was stable enough.
[ Sakuma soon demands to see her trainer, and Kaiba takes his turn cuddling her. She lets out a happy 'goo!' and off they go. ]
It's a nice cottage. Nothing mansion-sizes, but there's plenty of room inside and out for the dragons to roam. Most nights are cloudy, but on a clear night we can see falling stars and Miniors. Sometimes we even get visiting Goomy at the pond.
We'd love to have you over.
no subject
What are you feeling food wise?
no subject
We'll see you soon, then.
As for food...I want to be greedy, but you came a long way for me. Anything other than trail mix and jerky sounds good right about now.
Greasy pub food might do it.
no subject
Kaiba, Kaiba. You're allowed to be greedy with me. We could go for surf and turf if you wanted. If you want pub food though, I can work with that. A pity neither of us are old enough to drink... We both deserve a toast to our success! You in particular for your journey as a trainer. You've beaten Johto, got a dragon ranch, and traversed Mt. Silver!
[He looks around, trying to decide which place looks the best.]
So are burger and fries what you want to go with? We could go with that place right there.
[Looks more classy than an average sports bar. Some place you'd see a local band play at on the weekends, sort of like a microbrewery.]
no subject
[ Grumble, grumble. That's still ridiculous. But he cracks a small smile and turns toward the attractive-looking pub. ]
I can always go back to steak tomorrow. Tonight I just want to feel full---haven't in a while.
[ He didn't go hungry, exactly, but it wasn't the most filling of meals. ]
Hm. As far as your business...have you filmed any commercials yet?
no subject
[Marik chuckles.]
Pub food is definitely the way to go if you want that.
[They walk into the pub and get a table big enough for them and their pokemon. Marik sits down and waits until Kaiba's comfortable before answering his question.]
I haven't yet. You're far better with advertisement... Got any tips for me?
no subject
Mm. Your main selling point is speed, right? And you want the Cyclizar to look as sleek as possible. I'd find a flat stretch of land to shoot on...the lands around Lavender should be fine. Climb up on a flying Pokémon and film it running from the air. It'll take some trial and error to get the angle right, but it'll catch eyes.
no subject
[Save him from making a truly cringey commercial that won't kill his player from second hand embarrassment, Kaiba.]
no subject
[ Everyone's happy! The delicious smells fill the air, and he's definitely pleased with this. ]
The image you're selling needs to be as attractive as possible. It might take a few shoots, but we'll get it done.
no subject
[Marik flips through the menu for a bit.]
I know what to get you, Sakuma, and King to split.
dragon disaster(s)
So it's time to call Kisara. Ring, ring. ]
...I'm on my way back. Has Kuri made any more holes in the walls?
no subject
And a tyrantrum squinting at them.]
Not yet?
no subject
[ The Altaria he's sitting on makes a soft huff, but does her best as she pulls into a dive. Whoa---]
I'll take her out for training, promise. Maybe regular intense exercise will do something.
no subject
It should? I know that helped when Sahalia was a baby, at least? Even if she still has her... moments... [Said t-rex is squinting at her now, but shifts to settle into a curled up ball instead. It's fine, she's just Like This.]
no subject
[ They dive and he yelps, and...soon enough they crash in the garden outside. A few Goomy scurry into the bushes. He's still on the phone as he coughs and tries to recover, so. ]
You can let her out in the yard. Don't worry, I can take her.
no subject
Harara at least has enough control of himself to slow down as he gets closer to just normally tackle into the pair to try and pin to ground and lick.]
Harara! [It's fine. They're fine.]
no subject
H---hey. Good to see you too.
[ He sighs and gives the dog a few big ear skritches, then rolls his bag off his shoulder and pushes it in Kisara's direction. ]
I bought a decent supply of TMs from the first few towns in Kanto. We can mail-order from Celadon, but the smaller towns are harder to get to.
no subject
Kisara's biting back a laugh at this point, taking the bag with a small bit of a hum.]
I should probably get the warps for them at some point, but this'll absolutely help put more on the babies~ [Not that she's entirely sure who the next breeding pairs should be, she's still working on that. Other than her nido pair who just kind of do whatever they want at this point.] I'm guessing your travel and training went good other than coming back to... this?
no subject
[ He sits up and gently helps Aura fluff her feathers. She sings softly, and he is calmed by her presence. He then lets Selene out of her ball, and the Sylveon does her best to cast her calming song. ]
...I should leave Selene here when I'm away. She's the best at wrangling dragons.
no subject
Though Khanajr is slowly making her way outside finally and just standing at Kisara's side, still just a biiiit taller than her. And a lot calmer than she used to be as a moody teenager. What a surprise.]
That might not be a bad idea since I think Khanajr is getting tired of her duties as babysitter. Which is... honestly still funny in hindsight. [That the once mischievous screaming baby is now a calm adult.]
no subject
[ Speaking of...there's Kuri right on cue, charging right at her trainer to headbutt him. It's his turn to wrestle, and he does so...though Selene watches just in case. ]
You all did well. Dig to the bottom of the bag.
[ He's brought some treats for Kisara's team from Pallet Town's bakery. ]
no subject
But she perks up at the mention of digging to the bottom of the bag, peering over Kisara's shoulder to watch her dig and produce treats.
And is immediately placated the second Kisara's offering her one and wandering back inside.]
... At least food makes up for it with her?
no subject
[ Oh, Kuri's getting tough. She might evolve soon. He wrestles and wrestles the little ankle-biter, and when she finally seems to tire, he finally offers her a treat. Good girl. ]
Don't worry about our dinner, I have that covered too. I thought we could try a restaurant.
no subject
She does seem a little shocked at the restaurant comment, though.]
... Really? I guess a little relaxation after a trip and chaos wouldn't be a bad idea. [For as long as she's been here and become accustomed to the fact she can take things, it's still a little odd!]
no subject
[ Kuri lifts her head and yips proudly. He sighs and pets her. ]
Is there anything special you want to try?
no subject
Hopefully not in the worst ways possible.]
... Mmm~ Nothing I can really think of? I'm just happy to not have to be babysitting and cooking tonight, honestly. [It's a lot of work, okay! Especially wrangling baby dragons and annoyed adult dragons.]
no subject
[ He smiles fondly at his team and Kisara's, then at her. She's a great partner. ]
Maybe we should also look into keeping another fairy type around the house. Any that interest you?
no subject
Luckily she's smiling in turn, the disheveled mess at least being placated for the time being. She'll sleep well tonight, that's for certain.]
I... haven't really looked into fairies all that much. So I can't say just yet, but it's not a bad idea. [It's not like she doesn't already have Pokemon that aren't dragons, after all.]
no subject
Like Selene, who thwarted my plans to make her an Umbreon by sneaking the wrong treats.
[Selene looks fake-offended. You love her, Seto, don't deny it.]
no subject
[Even she knows.]
no subject
She's always been independent. Doesn't really surprise me that she made her own choice...but we made it work in the end anyway.
...mm. And business looks like it's going well. Do you need anything else for your breeding projects?
no subject
She certainly seems happy enough about it. [Not that she knew her as an eevee, but she's still pretty certain that's the case.]
Let's see... [She's tapping her chin as she runs through a list of things she had needed. Or, well, what she might need in this case.] So faaaaar I don't think I need anything, I'm still working on what pairings might be best to encourage since each have their own personality types. Khanajr, for instance, is being a little stubborn about the whole thing.
no subject
No wonder there aren't many specialized dragon breeders. They're so stubbon. But we'll just have to be creative and work hard to make them comfortable.
May 7th - After the broadcast - private/video;
Ghhhhh....
no subject
King and Sakuma show up at the sound of Uncle Marik in distress, watching with sad eyes. Kaiba reaches over to pet them.]
...I get it. Those scumbags. But we'll have the last laugh. If there's anything I know better than running a business, it's crushing a rival business.
